Lakewood is located in the watershed of the South Platte River. With 150,000 people as of 2010, is the most populated city in Jefferson County in Colorado. The city is currently ranked as the fifth largest city in Colorado. Not only it is located west of Denver, but this wooded land is also part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area. Charles Welch and W.A.H. Loveland platted this 13-square region along Colfax Avenue west of Denver in 1889. After his retirement from the Colorado Central Railroad, Loveland moved from Golden to Lakewood.
Until 1969, the region was known as Lakewood had no city government until 1969. The city relied on the administration of Jefferson County, and several other water and fire districts. The community was established in 1940. It has been patrolled by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office. In addition, the fire districts were staffed with volunteer firefighters. Unfortunately, this settled rural community had many streets without lights and sidewalks. The city was eventually incorporated as Jefferson City in 1969 and then later changed to Lakewood. In 2011, Lakewood was named an All-America City. There are several small lakes, rivers, and reservoirs throughout the city that make it a desirable place to live work and play.
